Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. Yangon (formerly Rangoon), the country's largest city, is home to bustling markets, numerous parks and lakes, and the towering, gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, which contains Buddhist relics and dates to the 6th century. The name of the country was changed from Burma to Myanmar in 1989. However some organizations (such as the US Government) due to their opposition to the government of Myanmar continue to refer to the country as Burma. Historically Burma is the English colonial name for the country. From the 13th century to 1885 when the British colonized the country it was indigenously known as "Mranma Prañ" or less formally, "Myanma", since the 13th Century, a time period when a succession of kingdoms existed. In the Burmese language it has been continuous called some variation of the word "Myanmar".
